Youth News!
6th-12th Graders
On Wednesday September 9th we had our first youth group meeting of the year. Both Tina and I were excited (and maybe a little nervous). As the youth started showing up the introductions began and our brains kicked into overdrive to try and remember 12 new names. Yup, that is right, 12! We were happy to have had that many youth show up and show a renewed interest in the group. We have plans to participate in the Crop Walk on Sunday October 4th, a haunted hayrack ride Saturday October 24th and look for some of us in the Asbury talent show on Sunday October 25th!
You can e-mail us at:

Come, observe, sign up, be grateful, meet new people, eat fair food (funnel cakes, chocolate dip, popcorn…)
Then go around the church and peek into the Sunday School rooms where you will see what the children and youth are doing, see the newly remodeled youth room! Stop off at the booth about Scotland, and if you have the time and want something really different and uplifting, stay for the second service and attend the Kirking of the Tartans!! They will also have a booth at the fair and some Scottish food too!

Cycles of Discipleship
There once was an old woman who lived in the church, well practically!!
She was there. She frequented the halls and rooms and sanctuary. She taught Sunday School, and that meant she helped keep the whole education area bright and clean. She kept track of little things like plants, and the details about the life of the church were at her fingertips. She noticed if you missed church and she called and inquired lovingly about your life. She maintained a bulletin board and put clippings of all the people who were mentioned in the paper who happened to be a member of the church. She was not a gossip, and yet she had a way of introducing people and telling others about the gifts of people so they would look forward to knowing each other. She knew the people, cared about the people and went the extra mile.
No, it was not a tiny church. It had as many as 800 members during her time. She was a good steward. I think she gave money to the church, but that really was not her legacy. Her legacy was love. Her legacy was connecting the members to one another.
It is time to think about Asbury. What is your legacy to Asbury? How are you building the walls of faith and strengthening the foundation of love? You will be asked to make a commitment of money. We can’t function without it. But you are also being asked to be a builder of hope, strength and love. Can you imagine Asbury filled even fuller with hospitality and love and ministry to the world? Can you imagine Asbury as a place where you want to be to learn the disciplines of a life in Christ even more that it is now? What can you give? How can you build? During all of October, we will focus on these ideas. REMEMBER THE MINISTRY FAIR AND COME AND FIND A PLACE. May the Holy Spirit be our fire and warmth.
Pastor Stephanie

I have been asked by Pastor Stephanie to be the "Prayer Team Leader" for four special Sundays in October. During this time, our church will be experiencing God's grace in many ways.

Asbury United Methodist Women are proud to offer their new cookbook, Tasteful Treasures. This is a collection of recipes from all of the cookbooks created by our Asbury United Methodist Women throughout the years. Recipes from the “Fashion & Salad” luncheon programs are included. At the end of the book is an index of all the contributors, so glance back to remember members and friends from the past, present, and those who have moved away. The cookbook is available in the church office for a suggested price of $17.00 per book. Proceeds will go to different missions, which is the main focus of United Methodist Women. We know you will enjoy seeing all the names, recipes, and memories of our UMW who have been members for many years.
Thank you for your support of UMW missions!
Fellowship With a Purpose
On the first and third Friday mornings of each month church members meet to help clean the first floor of the church. Cleaning and coffee time take approximately 2 hours.
Anyone interested is welcome with “open arms” to help beginning at 8:30 a.m. with coffee break and fellowship at 9:00. Call Bob Reiter (332-5898) or Dale Seebach (359-0566) if you have questions.
Table Talk
One of the aspects of our new Stewardship Campaign is prayer. It is one of the reasons we chose it. Usually we are busy will all the details, the organization, the presentation. It becomes a deadline thing. There is always a “let’s get it done” mentality. We then “forget” why we are doing it, just as we forget why we do so many things. Prayer reminds us we DO because we are God’s people. It puts our life in order. It is a focusing.
It is time to focus on Asbury, the body of Christ in the world. It is time to step back from the entanglements of our involvement there and see the amazing body Asbury is. Then our prayers are formed. First, we praise God out of the wonder of it. Then we become thankful for the many ministries and the love and hope the body of Christ is. We talk to God about it. We confide and share in a manner of loving awe. We look to the future and ask for guidance. Mostly in prayer we sit in the present presence of God and KNOW and EXPERIENCE the love of Christ. Then we pass it on. Think of the people of our church and surround them with love. Remember the bishop, our district superintendent, our pastors and staff, our leaders and our members and friends. If you don’t know all these people personally that is okay, you can still hold them in love by virtue of our mutual connection to Christ. Then pray for guidance to know and see how you belong to Asbury and how God is calling you to further your loving commitment. What are God’s gifts in you waiting for an opportunity to grace others? We sometimes forget we have gifts. However, God makes us with something to give. That is the great orchestration of life. What can you offer to God that will bless the church and world and develop it into the body of Christ that is “in shape” because all are involved in it?
We are having a Ministry Fair on October 18th. My greatest fear is that very few will attend. It is that people don’t want to be involved. That is what all the studies indicate. All of us who are participating in the Fair believe that if ALL of us are in prayer about it together, God will call each of us. We then desire to respond to the generous gifts God is bestowing on each of us by offering them through the church. So, for the next two weeks pray for the Fair. Pray for it to be a joy and for God to be “seen” there. God is everywhere. Do we have eyes to see? Pray for God’s Church to be a fulfillment of our longing for God and God’s longing for us.
In holy wonder,
Pastor Stephanie

Dear Friends at Asbury,
It’s a beautiful, late summer afternoon. I’m sitting on our back porch. The sun is dappling through our neighbor’s oak trees. It shines brightly and the light streaks across the grass of our yard. The grass is a deep green – a forest green – because of this year’s abundant summer rain. The trees, with their leaves that flicker in the breeze, form deep, dark shadows on the lawn. The shadows are so dark that they seem like wide and deep crevices with shimmering edges. As the sun falls upon the western horizon the shadows turn darker, deeper, and they appear to be growing across the lawn. I watch this phenomenon with some trepidation. I realize that this afternoon is merely in process of being transformed into evening and night; but the experience seems to be a metaphor for something else that is taking place in our nation.
Just a little over a year ago the United States elected its first African American president. As with all elections there are winners and losers. The winners work to make their win legitimate and the opposition begins work to try and understand the loss and how they might return to prominence in the next election. In the midst of this political reality there was – and is – a cause for great celebration. Given the context of America’s history of slavery and racism, we have overcome something of our dark past in some meaningful way with the election of Barak Obama.
And here I confront the trepidation that the afternoon sun and shadows seem to reveal. The election of Barak Obama can be seen as a sign of a new sunrise and new day for our nation. This is true even if his politics are not in harmony with our own. But there is also cause for worry as the dark shadows of racism appear across political landscape. When prominent spokespeople for the opposition party refer to President Obama as “Half-rican-American” and when the president is portrayed dressed as a “native” African tribesman from an old Tarzan movie of the 1940’s there is an element of racism taking place. When the president is accused of not being an American citizen and when people rally against him by saying that “he’s not one of us,” there is an aspect of racism involved. I have been wondering about these circumstances for some time and just this week former President Jimmy Carter named it for what it is: a very dark shadow that spills across the fabric of our political world.
You and I understand ourselves to be followers of Jesus Christ. He calls us to be bearers of light in the world and to shine that light in the shadows. We all have legitimate political differences and opinions. They are, in part, what makes the United States a great and dynamic nation. Yet, even as we stand up for our particular political ideals we must do so while affirming the light of our faith. May we shine our light in the dark shadows that seem to be growing across our world.
Peace & fire,
Pastor Tom
Flu Clinic
October 21, 2009
Asbury will be hosting our 8th Annual Flu Clinic on October 21, 2009 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. in Upper Fellowship Hall. Trinity VNHA will provide us with our seasonal flu injection and pneumonia injection (if needed). At this time we still do not have any definite information regarding the H1N1 vaccine and are not sure if it will be available to us for our clinic. If this vaccine does become available to us I will let you know as soon as possible.
The Swine (H1N1) Flu is an influenza virus that causes fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills, and tiredness. Some people may have a runny nose, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Flu germs spread through the air. Please, cover your nose & mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands after you cough or sneeze, and if you get sick stay home from work or school and try not to have contact with other people. If you think you have the flu call or go see your doctor right away.
The flu shot fee this year will be $35.00 except for those providing documentation of Medicare Part B. Please make sure you have your card!! And of course our clinic will offer special treats (cookies & coffee). Mark your calendar! I look forward to seeing you on October 21st from Noon to 2:00pm!
