ANNOUNCEMENTS - June 13, 2010
Asbury United Methodist Church
June 13, 2010
Welcome to worship at Asbury United Methodist Church. If you are a visitor from another congregation, we extend to you our greetings and hope you can join us again. If you are living in the Quad City area, and are not active in a church, we invite you to consider becoming active with us.
CHANGE IN SUMMER OFFICE HOURS
This summer, the office at Asbury will be closing at noon on Fridays. The office will be open the following hours: Monday-Thursday, 8:00-12:00 and 1:00-4:00, and Friday 8:00-12:00.
JAZZ SUNDAY
Jazz Sunday at Asbury will be on July 11th at both the 8:30 and 10:00 a.m. services! Tewanta & Manny Lopez and friends will provide special music and lead the congregational singing. Mark your calendars! Come and enjoy the jazzy worship services with our guests! (A welcome reception for our new pastors will follow at 11:00 in Upper Fellowship Hall.)
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
JULY 19-23 AT ASBURY
V.B.S. at Asbury is scheduled for the week of July 19-23, from 9:00 till noon. The theme this year is Group’s “High Seas Expedition”. Children in Preschool through 5th grade, completed, are invited to attend! Applications are available in the church office. There is a $3.00 per child craft fee payable with registration or on the first day of Bible School. Adult and youth leaders are also needed. Please call the church office at 355-5218 to volunteer.
CARD MINISTRY
Asbury Card Ministry will not be meeting in the months of June and July. Meetings will resume on the regular schedule of the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 starting August 11th, so we hope you will be able to join us then!
ASBURY’S WORSHIP IS NOW ON CD AND AUDIO!
CDs of our 8:30 Worship services are available for one week check out in the church library. The CDs are located in the adult section, next to the check-out box. Audio of each worship service is now available to stream or download to your computer from the Asbury website (www.asbury-bett.org).
FELLOWSHIP WITH A PURPOSE
Fellowship with a Purpose group will not be meeting over the summer. Watch for future announcements about their fall meeting schedule in the bulletin beginning in August. A big thank you goes to everyone who helped over the past year!
GARDEN MINISTRY
The Grace Church Garden plot just north of 53rd and Eastern and the Garden west of the soccer fields at Mt. Joy look great except for some weeds which recent rains have given a head start. The weeds in the rows can be taken out with the tillers. However, weeds close to the plants need hand pulling. The more people we can have pull a few weeds, the better the harvest will be. During the next two weeks, we are asking all the volunteers and anyone else who can take a little time to pull weeds between and around the plants to help. This can be done at any time. Just pull them and put them in one of the buckets near the garden.
In addition, we need three volunteers to run or learn to run a Mantis tiller for a few hours a month. If we can get the weeds under control, we should have a great harvest. Your help is needed. We encourage families to take a little time to add to our volunteers if they haven’t helped before. This is a great project to feed the hungry. Many hands make light work. Please give it a try and keep the garden project in your prayers.
Anyone with questions can either see Bill Cameron after first church or call him at 332-4898.
ASBURY LIBRARY
Due to the necessary budget cuts this year, the Library Committee is seeking donations to help with necessary expenses. Asbury’s Library is one of the largest church libraries in the Conference, with more than 6,600 items including children’s, youth & adult sections with fiction and informational books, CDs, DVDs, etc. Monetary donations would be greatly appreciated. You may make your check to Asbury UMC, with “Library” indicated on the memo line. Please be sure to take the opportunity to visit our fine Library and check out books that are of interest to you!
SPRING CLEANING????
Remember to save some items for the annual rummage sale held during the last week of July. AIM – Asbury in Mission – will use the proceeds to fund our relief efforts in Oakville, Cedar Rapids and anywhere that disasters happen in Iowa.
Thank you for your support! Global Ministries Committee
AUDIO AND POWERPOINT IN WORSHIP
We have had several calls from persons requesting to volunteer to help with the audio and/or PowerPoint presentations in the worship services. If you would like to be included in a training session to learn to run the PowerPoint at the church, please sign-up in the church office or contact Bob Mattison at 332-9889 or rmattison@platinum-corp.com.
AFGHAN MINISTRY NEEDS YOUR HELP
We now have afghan squares ready to be whip-stitched! You may pick up a bag in the church office. If you need directions, give Brenda a call! It is very easy to do. Of course, you may also continue to help by crocheting or knitting 7x7 inch squares and bringing them to the church office. Feel free to take whatever yarn you like from the basket in the East Narthex. Thank you for your help in this wonderful ministry our church provides to our members and as an outreach to our community.
2010-2011 ASBURY PRESCHOOL REGISTRATION
Asbury Preschool is currently accepting applications for the 2010-2011 school year. The Tuesday-Thursday class is offered for 3-4 year olds and the Monday-Wednesday-Friday class is for children 4-5 years old. Please call 355-5218 for more information.
BOOK BAG SEWERS WANTED!
We are in need of volunteers to sew book bags for school kits to be taken to the November Ingathering. Six packets with material, instructions, and a sample book bag may be picked up in the church office. Our goal is 36 book bags. There is material for six bags in each of the packets. The sewing is simple, straight stitching and requires only your time, thread and talent. Bags need to be completed by October 15th. If you have questions, please call Bev Warner at 332-5042.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
A welcome reception for our new pastors will be held at 11:00 a.m., following the Praise Service, on July 11th in Upper Fellowship Hall. Enjoy refreshments, fellowship and the opportunity to introduce yourself to Pastors Kerrin and Emmanuel.
