During the month of July Asbury’s Church and Society Commission will be collecting school supplies for the Quad City area children who may not have basic supplies to begin their school year.

Asbury will once again be part of the First Day Project – Student School Supply Drive which was started several years ago. We will join in their effort to provide supplies to every child in need. Suggested school items are crayons, markers, scissors, glue, glue sticks, pencils, erasers, rulers, folders, spiral notebooks, etc.

Supplies and monetary donations may be taken to the church office during the month of July. Offering envelopes will be provided in Sunday bulletins during this time for your convenience as well. (Please make checks payable to Asbury UMC with “First Day Fund” noted on the memo line.)

Please consider donating to this community project – what a great way to help children! Church & Society thanks you for your participation once again!

The Friendly Thrift Center

Needs YOU

and We Need Your STUFF!!

Do you have some free time you would like to contribute to a very worthy cause? The Friendly Thrift Center may be the answer. We are located at The Center (the old Wayne Montgomery Building), across from St. John’s United Methodist Church at 14th and Brady in Davenport. Open Monday through Saturday from 9-1, we are looking for willing persons who would like to cashier or help sort donations and put them out for sale. Most volunteers work one morning a week, but some work on specific projects and work at their convenience. We can be very flexible in scheduling your services.

We sell donated goods at nominal prices and we give things away to people who come to us with vouchers from other agencies such as Humility of Mary, United Neighbors, etc. Any money we have left after our expenses are paid is granted to others. Grants this year went to twenty-five different groups and totaled $12,200. Our House Preschool, Family Resources, Meal Service of Scott County and the Safer Foundation were among those receiving grants this year.

Now about your STUFF. We gladly accept all clothing and small household items in usable condition. We are especially in need of men’s casual and work clothes and outerwear. Also, sheets, towels, blankets, flatware, dishes, pots and pans and small appliances are always in great demand. We also welcome your shopping bags and grocery size bags. You may drop off donations during our business hours or leave them in the donation box on the lower level at Asbury.

Many Asbury members are among our faithful volunteers. Those include Carolyn & Don Keeney, Ruth Baylor, Leona Ferguson, Judy Hansen, Sharon Jones, Sheila Kistenmacher, Bob & Mimi Christoffersen, Ann & Marshall Lawson, Nan Mark, Fred Pierce, Bob Reiter, Carole Rogan, Al Sloss, Thiara Smith, Bev Warner, Suzanne Yoder, Deb Gamble and Jane Fergades. Ask any of us about the Friendly Thrift Center and consider volunteering! It is an opportunity to follow Christ’s directive to do for others.

Thanks and blessings,

Jan Douglas, President

Altar Flowers

Thank you to Debra Spina and Holly Peterson for providing altar flowers on Sunday, June 27th in loving memory of their parents, Bill and Helen Cade.

There is a sign-up sheet in the East Narthex year-round for anyone who would like to provide flowers for our altar. This is a nice way to honor a loved one or to celebrate a special occasion.

Grateful and Heartfelt Thanks!

What an astonishing surprise and glorious Sunday we had on the 13th. We thank you from the depths of our hearts. When we began to plan the outdoor worship, the idea of also making that our farewell was born. One of the matters that arose was the issue of food. I indicated that we did not want the church to cater it, preferring a potluck. Well, a generous and talented Steve Hall somehow got the idea of GIVING all the side dishes. Not only was that an amazing act of kindness, his talents certainly made the meal something to remember and savor. Donations provided the meat sandwiches. It all came from you; what a bountiful blessing that was. The gifts of music will soar in our souls always. We cherish all the rich talent generously poured out. Gail, Michael and Joe have all been a blessing throughout our ministry. They have been pleasant, encouraging, talented and faithful. We are all richly blessed by them over and over.

Then there was the wonderful “money tree”. It was a hibiscus tree that is still blooming abundantly on our back screened in porch where we nestle much of the time during the warm seasons. We love hibiscus. But the gift “growing” on the tree was the most amazing thing of all. It was a lavish gift and we hope to have some fun with it. We have several ideas brewing. Time will tell. Many thanks!!

In Christ who is peace, blessing, hope and strength,

Pastors Stephanie and Tom

Thank You to All Asbury Blood Donors

FYI, although they ask you at the blood center if you are giving for a church or other organization, Asbury does not get credit for our mobile blood drive for your gift.

Thank you for your life saving gift,

“Now the LORD said to Abram, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you.’”

(Genesis 12:1)

My family has not moved in 17 years. The last time we packed up our family belongings and set up our home in a new place was when I left my engineering job at Amana and started seminary. The move was more than a move; it marked a whole new season in our lives.

Our move to the Quad Cities also brings an entirely new season. Our youngest daughter, Rachel, will be going off to Iowa State this fall, and Carl and I will be empty-nesters. As I look around our new home here in Bettendorf, I am feeling a bit like Abram must have felt after he left everything familiar: a little overwhelmed, a tad lost, and wondering what the future will bring.

We do have an advantage over Abram, in that we have been warmly welcomed by our new Asbury family. You have fed us as we unpacked (Thank you Ryneers, James, Yoders, and Windmillers!). The Staff Pastor Parish Committee and Asbury staff have worked extra hard to make sure everything has been in place to make our move go as smoothly as possible (Thank you, thank you!). Each time we have met more members of our new family, we have been welcomed and encouraged (Bless you!). It is amazing how many times already someone has shown up just when we needed some encouragement!

I realize that every time a pastor moves, two congregations must also begin a new season. A new appointment affects everyone. Knowing that reality is little consolation to anyone involved. Moving still stinks, and adjusting to new seasons is hard. And yet, after having walked through a few of these seasons with the Lord, I am convinced that such transitions are necessary. God does have a plan for our life together. The Scriptures are full of testimonies that point to resurrection when God’s people are willing to die to their own agendas. We are called by God to faithfully walk through those dark valleys and new lands, not for harm, but to give us a future with hope (see Jeremiah 29:11). In order to grow in Christ so that we can reach out to the world in the love of Christ, we are called to leave behind that which is comfortable, familiar, and secure. Our security lies in Jesus Christ alone, not in what we can acquire, build, or control. And so, God’s people, all of us, begin new seasons. We, like Abram, are called to many new journeys as we continue to strive to be faithful.

I am very much looking forward to serving as your Senior Pastor and partner in ministry. God is truly up to something here at Asbury United Methodist Church. The hope we share in Christ overrides the risk we take by leaving all things familiar when God calls. Abram stands as a witness to this hope, as do many other mothers and fathers of faith throughout the history of God’s people.

Yours for the journey,

Pastor Kerrin

Newly Remodeled Meditation Chapel

Please stop by the newly renovated chapel and take a peek! It is located between the library and the ladies restroom.

The new chapel was made possible with gifts of memorials from several families at Asbury.

Many people helped with the beautiful renovation. A special thank you to the following:

*Larry Coffman for repairing the walls, priming and painting the room.

*Pat Ryken for the two table lamps.

*Jan Windmiller for paint recom-mendations and decorating expertise.

*Ron Stafford and Merle Gifford for taking down and putting up shelves, speakers and new tables.

*Bob Reiter for moving an electrical outlet.

The Meditation Chapel has been underused in the past. We hope to see that change! The chapel contains Bibles, pencils, paper, devotional booklets, and books on prayer.

How can the Meditation Chapel be used?

The chapel is a place to be alone to relax, to read and wait for a family member who is attending an activity. It is a place to pray for loved ones, parents, teenagers, children, those who are ill, etc. The chapel is a place to prepare a Sunday School lesson, or to write in a personal journal. It is a place to share your favorite Bible verse on a slip of paper to help encourage others, or a place to share a prayer request knowing that another person will pray for that request at a later time.

The chapel is a place to meet in groups, for prayer, for a Bible study, for a healing service, for a small wedding, or for any small and intimate group.

Please use and enjoy the Meditation Chapel.

Sincerely,

Chapel Renovation Committee

Rona Loweth, Mary Gifford,

Dee James & Carol Seebach

SOD-BITS

Hallelujah, our garden plots are completely planted. (Mt. Joy plot- 3/4 acre; Grace plot at 53rd and Eastern - .6 acre; and a 20' x 20' plot on Rock Island Arsenal). For those of you who may not know, our Garden Ministry got its start on Rock Island Arsenal in the spring of 2002. We had 13 of these 20' x 20' plots which equated to about 1/10 of an acre.

With the frequent rains we have been getting, the plots are looking great. Our biggest challenge from now until harvest begins in earnest around the 1st of July (cabbage, most likely) is to keep the weeds under control. I want to sincerely thank all of you who have devoted time to pulling weeds at the Mt. Joy and Grace plots. The Grace onion patch looked like a sea of weeds with no onions visible when an "all-out attack" was launched to remove the weeds. After many hours of weed-pulling, the onion patch now looks great. I want to thank Thiara Smith for the MANY hours she devoted to pulling weeds. God has given each of us special abilities and interests; God blessed Thiara with an interest in pulling weeds. Of the various facets of gardening (planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting), weeding is probably the facet looked forward to the least by most gardeners. Thankfully, we have gardeners like Thiara who truly enjoy weeding and get pleasure out of knowing that the weeding efforts will make a huge difference in the quantity of vegetables harvested.

As the growing season proceeds, we will have core gardening times to address various needs of the garden plots. Bill will be calling to get volunteers for such scheduled gardening times. However, we encourage you to go out to the garden sites whenever your schedule allows and pull weeds; I can guarantee that you will find some to pull. There are buckets at both sites that we ask that you put the pulled weeds in. (at Mt. Joy, dump the weeds over the fence; at the Grace plot, dump them at the edge of the garden and we will dispose).

Just to give you an idea of what we have planted- approximately 27,000 onion plants; around 460 tomato plants; around 400 cabbage plants; over 250 pepper plants; 750 lbs. of seed potatoes which equates to over 7,000 hills of potatoes; cucumber, zucchini, muskmelons, watermelons, green peppers, and a few other miscellaneous vegetables. We are hoping for a harvest of around 40,000 lbs. which will put us over 200,000 since the inception of the Ministry in 2002.

If you have not been involved in Garden Ministry, we encourage your participation. If your schedule or health does not allow you to become involved, we ask that you take some time and drive by the 2 sites and take a look at what our Garden Ministry is doing to take a bite out of hunger in the Quad-Cities.

We hope to see you in the gardens!

Dave Phillips, Coordinator (332-8462)

Music Volunteers Needed

Heritage Free Will Baptist is a small church without a pianist to provide music for their services. They have used guitars in the past, which is good but lacking something at times. In an effort to improve their song service they have recently purchased a Clavinova to record the hymnal, as well as other praise & worship music, and they will then use the recordings to lead the song services. They are looking for people who play the piano well and would be willing to give an hour of time to go to the church and record a few hymns. Your music will live on and your talents will be a blessing for many years to come. For more information please call Barb Graves (388-0956) or Jim Martin (391-4251) or:
